Ce concept est en pleine expansion depuis les années 60 au USA, et les années 90 en Europe, avec une demande qui ne cesse de croitre d’année en année. Il consiste à mettre à disposition des clients professionnels et particuliers, des cellules de stockage sécurisées en libre accès, appelées « BOX DE STOGAGE » (de 1 à 25 m2, pouvant aller jusqu’à 50m2), pour y stocker : du matériel, des archives, des affaires saisonnière, du matériel de sport, des meubles.

Des contrats de location flexible à tous point de vu.
Un box peut être loué pour une journée, une semaine, un mois ou plusieurs années. Il est possible de changer taille et d’arrêter la location à tout moment. Cette grande flexibilité offre une nouvelle rentabilité pour les entreprises et les indépendants qui ont besoin d’espace complémentaire pour le stockage de matériel, d’archives, ou pour optimiser leur logistique et faciliter leur déploiement dans d’autres villes.

Etant en libre accès gratuit, les box de stockage sont préférés aux garde-meubles traditionnels qui disparaissent peu à peu. Les évènements de la vie professionnelle ou personnelle conduisent au manque d’espace et au besoin de stocker des affaires en dehors du domicile (déménagement, travaux, séparation, naissance, hausse de l’immobilier,…) .

La forte augmentation du e-commerce a provoqué une mutation de la logistique et la location de box de stockage simplifie la gestion « du dernier kilomètre » grâce à une implantation des centres de self-stockage aux abords des villes.
